No Green Gene? No Problem, Visit a Farmer’s Market

In March 2009, First Lady Michelle Obama broke ground for the White House organic garden. I watched her on television as she made the first dig, and was thrilled at the site of the twenty-three fifth graders from Bancroft Elementary School in Washington, D.C., digging right along with her. The 1,100-square-foot garden plot is located on the south lawn of the White House. The garden is a symbol that educates and encourages children about nutritious foods to eat. It will provide food for the White House’s First Family, staff, visitors, and also help feed the hungry.

Growing up, we always had a garden. Although my mom, Hazel Ann, may not give herself this title, but I label her as an “avid gardener.” Along with my in-laws, Ernestine and Jay, she grew up eating organic vegetables and fresh fruits grown from her backyard. Unfortunately, everything I plant dies, so I guess the green gene skipped me. Now, as a mother, I sometimes feel guilty because I don’t have a garden to gather fresh vegetables. Instead, I buy fruits and vegetables from the local grocery store.

Optimistic, I decided to venture out and learn more about organic foods and various ways to support local farmers. I gained an interest in buying directly from farmers, after visiting Sag Harbor’s Farmers Market. While at the market, the weather matched the personalities of the farmers: absolutely beautiful. There were white tents lined up in a row with local farmers selling everything from vegetables, baked goods, cheese, honey, fish, and much more. Many farmers offered samples to my family and me as we visited each tent. The food was very tasty and nutritious.

We live in a super-sized world where fast food and eating out is advertised on a daily basis. Sometimes easy access to fast foods can make us forget about what is most nutritious for us to eat. Local Harvest.org web site states, “The best organic food is what's grown closest to you. Use our website to find farmers' markets, family farms, and other sources of sustainably grown food in your area, where you can buy produce, grass-fed meats, and many other goodies.” I’ve used the website to help find local farmers’ markets near my community. The next trip to the farmers’ market will be at Serenbe. I look forward to instilling in our children the lifestyle of eating healthy and supporting local farmers.

Verizon Wireless Celebrates It’s a Family Affair™ contest with Blair Underwood

Oakland, CA, May 23, 2011 With the season of family reunions and summer vacations fast approaching, one lucky family will soon celebrate a reunion they’ll never forget.  The grand prize winner of Verizon Wireless’ It’s a Family Affair™ contest will win an all-expense-paid family reunion for up to 100 guests.  The prize includes a reunion venue, catering, entertainment and a dedicated website to post family images, videos, comments and more.

“Four years ago Verizon Wireless introduced How Sweet the Sound, a national gospel choir competition, and the response from the African-American community was overwhelmingly positive,” said Christina Gonzalez, director of multicultural marketing for Verizon Wireless in the western U.S.  “With It’s a Family Affair, we’re giving back to the community, once again, in a culturally relevant way.”

Families can register for the contest at www.VerizonFamilyAffair.com now through May 30, 2011 at midnight.  Entrants must submit photos that demonstrate how their family keeps their close connection, and answer a few short, open-ended questions, such as: “What words of wisdom does your family live by?”

The voting period runs from June 7 to June 16.   Verizon Wireless will select fifty families as semi-finalists and post their stories on the contest website.  The public will then vote to determine which family wins the ultimate family reunion from Verizon Wireless. The company will announce the winning family no later than June 25.

To celebrate the It’s a Family Affair™ contest, Verizon Wireless recently hosted a family-friendly event at its Communications Store in San Leandro. Some attendees won prizes such as BlackBerry® smartphones and tickets to local concerts.

In addition, the first 100 people who donated no-longer used cell phones and accessories to Verizon Wireless’ HopeLine® phone recycling program at the event had an exclusive opportunity to participate in a meet and greet with actor and director Blair Underwood that included a picture with Underwood and an autographed photo. Pictures from the It’s a Family Affair™ event are available to be viewed at www.verizoninsider.com/galleries.

Dr. Manning Marable: Remembering Our Father

Celebration of the Life of Dr. Manning Marable on the Morningside Campus of Columbia University, Roone Alredge Auditorium, Lerner Hall on May 26, 2011.

On behalf of my older sister, Malaika, and twin brother, Joshua, we want to thank you for joining us this evening, to celebrate the life of an extraordinary and inspirational man, and above all, an exceptional Father.  On this day, and every day, it makes us proud to honor a true champion for our people, whom he so loved, our Dad.

Our hearts have continued to ache over his passing, but we have found strength in reflecting on the memories that we shared and how he chose to express himself and live on earth.  We are forever thankful and appreciative of everyone who has reached out to us, and who loved him as much as we did. We thank you.

To most of you, he was Dr. Marable, Professor Marable, or Manning. To us he was Dad, Daddy, and Pops. To him we were Tiger, Soji (My Little Girl) and Handsome Son.

There is no greater gift to give your children than to be amazing. Dad was amazing.

Daddy was our Hero.  Growing up we were captivated by his storytelling that took us to his childhood days - playing practical jokes on Uncle Jimmy, marveling over his younger sister, our Aunt Madonna, and spending long-hot summers with family in Tuskegee, Alabama.  He was an animated storyteller, had a great sense of humor and was very funny. His stories of real life experiences captured our imaginations, warmed our hearts, and impacted our lives.

Dad was gifted.  He had the ability to make you feel like you were the most important person in the world.  His charm, charisma, and radiant heart could light up any room.  People were drawn to his magnetism.  Dad was hip and in his own words, a real "cool cat."

Dad provided sound advice at the right moments, to comfort you during the toughest times.  He was always there when you needed him most. His smile, loving hugs, light-hearted jokes and songs, would make you come alive and brighten your day.

As a child, our grandparent's blessed over him and directed him towards becoming a historian. Dad had an incredible mind, and his memory was remarkable.  Growing up, we called him our “walking encyclopedia.”  We could be anywhere, and he would know the importance and historical significance of each place, building, and person.  He was a humble genius.  A classic academic. We recall as children, forming an assembly line at the kitchen counter, stuffing and sealing envelopes for his column,“From the Grassroots,” which later became the column, "Along the Color Line."

We believe he spoke so passionately about his work because he loved it so much, but also for all of us to carry on his legacy. Every story, every book, every lecture, small talk at the dinner table, walk on the Vineyard, speak truth to power and his words into existence and live not only for him but for yourselves.

He will always be with us. He lives through his teachings, books, students, colleagues, family, children, and grandchildren. Dad would want us to find our life's true passion and live each day walking on that path and fighting for what's right, even when some may be too scared or think that you are wrong. That's speaking truth to power.

We miss everything about him. His laugh. His smile. His real hugs and warm embrace. The way he danced, talked about sports, his listening ear and sound advice.  His hand clap and laugh, pretending to bite his nails waiting to tell us the punchline of a joke. The twinkle in his eyes when he talked about his life's work. The many other books that he had stored in his mind. Him.

So today we say, thank you. Thank you Daddy for being an inspiration to us all. Thank you for being an exceptional human being. Above all thank you for being an amazing Father.

We are forever thankful for his love, support, and guidance.

Our Dad was not only amazing in his work but truly amazing as a Father. That's the type of legacy that we want to leave. Be Amazing.

Thank you.

The Quality of An Education

My heart ached when I read the article in The Huffington Post, "Detroit Schools Closing: Michigan Officials Order Robert Bobb to Shut Half The City's Schools."  The school closings may increase class sizes to 60 students.  My mind spun around in circles.  I had a gut-wrenching feeling just thinking about how many students will not receive a quality education, if this plan passes.

Americans are experts and innovators in many fields, but when it comes to education, we're not progressing as we should.  The average teacher’s salary in the United States according to payscale.com, is $35,869 - $53,734 per year.  How many teachers are going to sign up to teach a class with 60 students for $35,869 dollars per year?  It's hard to manage an average class size of 26 students, let alone 60 students.  There are so many implications for what could go wrong if this happens.  Such stress upon the teachers and student population, could eventually lead to increased crime, poverty, and a higher drop out rate.

I have worked in education for nearly 12 years, but don't know all of the ins and outs of budgets or the reasons why teachers aren't getting paid more.  I have never met a teacher that doesn't love her/his occupation.  They stay late hours to grade papers, read assignments on the weekends, spend their own money on school supplies, and counsel students.  At the same time, I have also met teachers that feel that their efforts aren't appreciated, work in undesirable conditions, and feel underpaid.  What would it take for teachers to make more money?

The topic of a quality education is constantly discussed in our household and with friends.  We agree that class sizes directly impact student achievement.  There was a clear difference when we took our oldest son out of a daycare that had 22 students in each class, and moved him to another daycare with 6 students per class.  He was able to receive individual attention in smaller groups, and excelled faster in his new environment.  Stronger relationships with his teachers and classmates were developed.

Every child deserves a quality education from grades K-12.  America continues to struggle on being highly ranked in the world of education. We are one of the wealthiest nations in the world, but our high school students are at best average in math and science.  We must not fail our own children, in or outside the classroom.

Group to Protest Clayton County Breast Feeding Law

By MYFOXATLANTA STAFF/myfoxatlanta

FOREST PARK, Ga. - Mothers and advocates of breastfeeding plan to protest a controversial ordinance Monday. The group is upset over a new law in Clayton County which limits public breast feeding.

More than 100 breast feeding women and supporters are expected to take part in a nurse-in Monday morning in Forest Park. The so-called "lactivists" are upset over a new law in the Clayton County community limiting public breast feeding.

The ordinance, which was passed to cut down on public nudity, prohibits breast feeding children aged 2 or older.

Organizers have used Facebook to publicize the event and say people from as far as Alabama are expected to attend.

The nurse-in is scheduled to take place in front of the Forest Park City Hall.

Are Smart Phones Dumbing Down Our Children?

My nephew can use an iPhone better than I can. He can flip through photos, enlarge pictures, turn them upside down, and the two-year-older can even go to his favorite Apps and demonstrate how to use them. I stare at him in shock, but quickly remember that my almost four-year-older can do the same thing.

Am I the only blogger in America that doesn't have a smart phone? I have this cute, sliding, free phone, while my husband has a sleek upgrade. Our oldest son can't figure out why my phone isn't like the majority of people in America.

Growing up, our cell phone was connected to a large battery and remained in the trunk of my mom's car, "for emergency purposes." The phone was huge and looked like a jukebox. We didn't have TV's in our rooms, had one desktop computer, a typewriter, which my dad used, and got phones in our rooms when we entered high school. I was so brainwashed about not having a TV in my room, that as an RA in college, I put my only TV in the living room.

The question is debatable, "Are smart phones and technology dumbing down our kids?" My initial reaction to that question is, "no." I think texting is making our kids a bit hyper and poses a danger when they try to multitask by tweeting, eating, breathing, and walking at the same time.

Emory University English professor Mark Bauerlein, is the author of The Dumbest Generation: How the Digital Age Stupefies Young Americans and Jeopardizes Our Future, stated he “does not trust anyone under 30.” What happens when the 30-year-old somethings, have children, then he would probably argue that we are corrupting them with social media. Are we tweeting too often: http://www.howoftendoyoutweet.com?

Matt McGee's article, "By the Numbers: Twitter vs. Facebook vs. Google Buzz,” statistically points out how often people are using social media:

Updates/Posts

* Facebook status updates: 700 per second
* Twitter tweets: 600 per second
* Buzz posts: 55 per second

And compared to searches (see our postscript below)

* Google: 34,000 searches per second
* Yahoo: 3,200 searches per second
* Bing: 927 searches per second

I'm torn about this subject, because sometimes I believe social media can cause interruptions in life and warp of reality. I get perturbed when someone answers a text during a meeting or a meal. Some have become too busy trying to describe their latest activity in 140 characters, while others are constantly responding to the question on Facebook, "What's on your mind?" On the flipside, social media has allowed people to connect and easily stay in touch.

Truth be told, social media is ingenious. We are in an age where technology is increasing, as well as our interest in learning more about the subject and discovering the wonders of the unknown and greater possibilities. Bottom line, I believe parents must monitor their children’s over-usage of technology. If your son/daughter is starting to put tweet phrases in his/her English paper or on the SAT, then we have something to be worried about. Until then, just monitor their statuses and tweets.
