Don Tate is an award-winning illustrator who has drawn for more than 40 books for children, including Duke Ellington’s Nutcracker Suite (Charlesbridge), She Loved Baseball (HarperCollins), and Ron’s Big Mission (Penguin).
It Jes’ Happened: When Bill Traylor Started to Draw marks Don’s debut as an author. It Jes’ Happened is a Lee & Low Books New Voices Honor winner and has already garnered praise—and a star—from Kirkus (a book review journal) and Publisher’s Weekly. Don lives in Austin, Texas, with his wife and son. He works as a graphics reporter for the Austin American-Statesman.

R. Gregory Christie has been freelancing as an illustrator for more than 17 years and has illustrated more than 28 children’s books. He is a three-time recipient of the Coretta Scott King Honor Award in Illustration and a two-time recipient of the New York Times’ 10 Best Illustrated Children’s Books of the Year Award.

Some of his past clients and collaborations include Warner Brothers, Moserobie Music, The New Yorker, the New York Times, The Children’s Museum of Manhattan, the Wall Street Journal, Vibe, Utne Reader, Rolling Stone, Montego Glover, and Pete Seeger. His book Yesterday I Had the Blues was animated and showcased on the PBS television show Between the Lions in 2008. Mr. Christie’s paintings have been used with an animated HBO Kids’ short movie for the educational DVD company Sweet Blackberry. He has also traveled the country, lecturing about literacy, geography, and history.

Recently, Mr. Christie has been commissioned by the New York City Metro Transit Authority’s “Arts for Transit” program to create an image that will be on display in the city’s subway cars for all of 2012. Additionally, Mr. Christie is opening up a live studio and children’s book gift shop in Decatur, Georgia.

Pull up your pants. No one wants to see your underwear.

My twin brother, Joshua sent me an image of a sign created by the Metropolitan Etiquette Authority which states, "Pull Up Your Pants: No One Wants To See Your Underwear." In 2010, New York artist Jay Shells, created and launched a subway etiquette campaign covering everything from pulling up your pants to texting and walking at the same time, that sign reads, "Pay Attention While Walking: Your Facebook Status Update Can Wait." You can see these etiquette signs scattered throughout the city.

The only thing conservative about me is the way that I dress.  That's it.  It's my own personal preference not to show cleavage at work, wear short shorts, and pierce my navel. I am a fan of self-expression, and have seen it all.

 

Last year, I wrote a post called, "Rapper Pants on the Ground and Tatted Up." I argued that I'm not a fan ofthe recent trends that I’ve seen popping up among some Black artists, who many young African Americans look up to as role models.  The most common trend is sagging pants and the latest trend is getting tattoos on the face.

Pants are so low on the ground these days, that you might as well walk in your draws. (Quick rant.) "Yes, take them off and walk in your underwear.  I think I would prefer seeing that, than you trying to stumble up the street, while holding your pants.  What is the point in wearing a belt if your pants are way below your waistline and tucked under your butt.  Not to mention if they are skinny jeans." Exhaled.

Do you think it would be helpful to have signs like these in our city? Am I alone in wanting young men to pull up their pants when walking? Or am I also the only one annoyed by people who text and walk at the same time?

Kauffman Tire and Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Celebrate 10^th Annual Spring Classic for Kids

Turner Field plays host to in-state rivals Georgia and Georgia Tech

ATLANTA (April 9, 2012) – The tradition continues for the 10^th straight year as Georgia and Georgia Tech prepare to square off in the Kauffman Tire Spring Classic for Kids on April 24 at Turner Field. The Kauffman Tire Spring Classic is one of the highest-attended regular season NCAA baseball games each year, selling more than 20,000 tickets in 2011.

Proceeds from the event benefit the pediatric research of the Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Neurosciences Program.  Children's Neurosciences Program collaborates with other institutions to discover preventative, diagnostic and wellness strategies for children with serious medical illnesses or challenges.  

“We are proud to be involved with Children's Healthcare of Atlanta and to be an integral part of the Spring Classic for Kids again this year,” said Mark Kauffman, President of Kauffman Tire. “Kauffman Tire is excited to support an event that has such a significant positive impact within the community."

Fans also have the opportunity to support Children’s leading up to the game though the Text-to-Give Challenge. A $10 contribution can be made by texting either ‘DAWGS’ or ‘TECH’ to 90999. This is a one-time donation, and the school with the most texts will be announced during the Kauffman Tire Spring Classic.

This is the second of three meetings between Georgia and Georgia Tech this season. The Bulldogs defeated the Yellow Jackets 7-1 in Athens on March 20, and they will meet again May 9 at Russ Chandler Stadium. Georgia leads the Kauffman Tire Spring Classic series with a 7-2 record.

Junior Deputy Clerk Summer Internship Program for High School Students (Atlanta)

Junior Deputy Clerk Summer Internship Program
Applications are now being accepted for the Clerk of Superior Court’s Jr. Deputy Clerk Summer Program.  This is a great opportunity for rising 10^th through 12^th grade Metro Atlanta Students.  The internship program, an initiative of Clerk Cathelene “Tina” Robinson, is designed to expose high-school students to careers in local government. Fulton County Marshal’s Department is looking for a few Good Men & Women

For the third year in a row the Fulton County ’s Marshal’s Department is putting out the call for boys and girls between the ages of 12 and 16 to have the experience of a lifetime and get an up close and personal look at what it takes to be Fulton County Marshal. There will be two week long Junior Deputy  Program with the first running from June 11-15 and the second beginning July 16 and ending July 20.  The sessions begin at 9 a.m. and ends at 4 p.m.   There will be 12 students selected for each session and an applicant can only attend one session. Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Talent Development Program

Today I took our boys to the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra's Talent Development Program which identifies and develops musically gifted African-American and Latino classical music students for acceptance to top music programs in preparation for careers as professional musicians. The event was located at the Southwest Atlanta Art Center in Atlanta, Georgia. The young musicians were absolutely amazing!
