• Rome - Local domestic violence program Hospitality House will serve as guest speaker on local radio show “Talk of the Town with Nelle Reagan,” AM 1470 WRGA.  Tune in at 9:00 a.m.
• Rome - Clothesline Project, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Georgia Council for the Hearing Impaired, 336 Broad Street, Suite 201.  Bring your own t-shirt to design as part of this display to honor those who have been impacted by domestic violence.
• Savannah – Ribbon Tying Ceremony, Forsyth Park.  To mark the commencement of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, SAFE Shelter will tie purple ribbons around the perimeter trees in Savannah’s historic Forsyth Park. 

 October 2^nd

• Rome - Annual Candlelight Vigil, Rotary Plaza (between the Forum and the courthouse, downtown Rome.  Refreshments at 6:30 p.m., program at 7:00 p.m.
• Winder – 12^th Annual Candlelight Vigil, Old Barrow County Courthouse.  The vigil will commence with a brief introduction of the Awareness Art Exhibit at the Old Barrow County Courthouse from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., followed by a march to the Winder Pavilion for the official candlelight ceremony from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. to honor those who have lost their lives to domestic violence.  

 October 2^nd through October 31^st

• Winder – Artwork display and sale, Old Barrow County Courthouse.  Begins with opening reception on Oct. 2 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., immediately preceding candlelight vigil at 7:30 p.m.  Ten percent of artwork sales goes to benefit Peace Place, Inc.

Verizon Wireless’ UHopeLine Empowers Students to Break the Silence of Dating Violence

February is Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month, a month dedicated to preventing the widespread issue of dating violence amongst young people. Unfortunately, dating and domestic violence is an issue too many teens have to encounter. According to Break the Cycle and the National Dating Abuse Helpline, one in three teens will experience abuse in a dating relationship and more than two-thirds of them will never report it to anyone.

Join Verizon Wireless in our efforts to address the growing issue of dating violence. Want to spread the message of dating violence prevention on your campus? UHopeLine, an extension of Verizon Wireless’ HopeLine® from Verizon, helps spread awareness of dating violence on college campuses and encourages students to give back to victims of domestic violence by donating no-longer-used wireless devices through student-hosted phones drives and permanent collection boxes. Donated devices are recycled or refurbished and turned into support for domestic violence victims in the form of phones with 3,000 minutes of free service or cash grants, which are then used to support domestic violence organizations across the country.

UHopeLine is making it easy for college students to get involved with the launch of a new online tool kit. This free kit includes prevention resources for students who wish to raise awareness of dating violence and give back to those who have been affected. The kit enables college administrators, student volunteer organizations and others interested in conducting outreach on college campuses to access the tools necessary to host phone drives and spread the message of prevention. Available resources include flyers, pledge cards and other printed materials to help launch dating and domestic violence awareness campaigns on campuses across the country.

Domestic Violence: Love Never Hurts

The last time I saw Corrissa Friends was at the Southern Friends Car Wash, located in Atlanta, Georgia. Her grandparent's own the business and she worked their part-time while attending college to become a nurse. Never in a million years would you have thought that this intelligent, vibrant, and beautiful 21-year-old woman was hiding so much pain behind her infectious smile.

Corrissa had such a promising future and her life was cut short by her estranged husband, Wisdom Jeffery, 17 years her senior who murdered her with a shotgun on August 11, 2010. Left to grieve are her family, friends and most heart-wrenching her young daughter, Casey Nicole Jeffery.





















Domestic Violence Homicides
1. One in four women (25%) has experienced domestic violence in her lifetime.

2. On average, more than three women and one man are murdered by their intimate partners in this country every day.

3. Estimates range from 960,000 incidents of violence against a current or former spouse, boyfriend, or girlfriend to 3 million women who are physically abused by their husband or boyfriend per year.




What is Domestic Violence?
The National Domestic Violence Hotline indicates:

• Domestic violence can be defined as a pattern of behavior in any relationship that is used to gain or maintain power and control over an intimate partner.
• Abuse is physical, sexual, emotional, economic or psychological actions or threats of actions that influence another person. This includes any behaviors that frighten, intimidate, terrorize, manipulate, hurt, humiliate, blame, injure or wound someone.

What does Domestic Violence look like?
Women Helping Battered Women lists the following questions on their website to help women and men determine if they may be in an abusive relationship:

• Does your partner stop you from talking to or seeing family or friends?
• Does your partner embarrass you with bad names and put-downs?
• Does your partner treat you roughly, grab you, shove you, push you?
