NEW Stage Play "Only Just A Minute" Coming to Atlanta August 20th! #OnlyJustAMinuteATL

Don't miss the new uplifting stage play Only Just a Minute! This wonderful production juxtaposes the lives of Morehouse's sixth president, Benjamin E. Mays, and his protege, Martin Luther King Jr. '48 at the crossroads of American history, as it examines the important events that helped shaped America and the promise of things to come.  Willie Carpenter of Lifetime TV’s Devious Maids performs the title role of Benjamin E. Mays in this must see play.

Only Just a Minute opens in Atlanta on August 20, 2014 for a four day run at the Ray Charles Performing Arts Center at Morehouse College located at 900 West End Avenue, Atlanta, GA.

Performances run through August 23 , 8 p.m. nightly and a Saturday matinee at 3 p.m. The production then moves to the Southwest Arts Center at 915 New Hope Road in Atlanta, where it runs from August 27 through September 7, with performances Wednesday through Sunday at 8 p.m. and a 3 p.m. matinee on Sunday.

The play is produced by Morehouse graduate Bob Dockery, ’66, who graduated the year before Mays retired as Morehouse president. Beautifully written by Aaron Henne including text and characters by Levy Lee Simon and directed by Atlanta’s own Tom Jones.

Chairman John Eaves and the Board of Commissioners Honor Civil Rights Icon Rev. Dr. C.T. Vivian

Fulton County Chairman John Eaves and members of the Fulton County Commission honored the achievements of Rev. Dr. C.T. Vivian today. An author, minister and close ally of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Dr. Vivian is one of the most prominent figures in the non-violent struggle for civil rights as a participant in the Freedom Rides and numerous sit-ins. In November 2013, President Barack Obama cited Dr. Vivian with one of the nation’s highest civilian honors, the Presidential Medal of Freedom. At a reception prior to the Fulton County Board of Commissioners’ first meeting in 2014, county leaders paused to honor Dr. Vivian for more than a half of a century of work on behalf of human rights.

Celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. Day at the Alliance Theatre

Celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. Day at the Alliance Theatre with free public performances inspired by the Declaration of Independence. The Alliance Theatre, in partnership with the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), presents a free reading of Life, Liberty, & the Pursuit of Happiness, an original script written by acclaimed author and playwright Pearl Cleage in collaboration with its high school Collision Project students. Created out of the Alliance Theatre Collision Project and inspired by the Declaration of Independence, this provocative piece uses the unique voice of teenagers to question issues of citizenship and diversity. The performances are part of the ADL’s annual No Place For Hate Summit, which will take place in a variety of locations on Monday, January 16, 2012.

About ADL No Place for Hate Summit

In an effort to build bridges of communication, understanding and respect among diverse groups, the No Place for Hate Summit provides participating students the chance to experience this powerful piece of theatre and then debrief after the performances to share their own dreams in breakout sessions facilitated by ADL leaders.

About the Collision Project

For three weeks each summer, the Alliance Theatre assembles a diverse group of 20 teenagers from metro Atlanta to explore and unpack a classic text under the guidance of a professional playwright and director. Through improvisational exercises, oral history, choreography, the individual performing talents they possess, and their writing, the teenagers create a new piece inspired by the classic text but perceived through their own utterly unique and contemporary prism. The Collision Project affords teens a unique theatrical experience and gives them ownership of a performance at the Alliance. It also gives students validity – confidence in their talents, strength for the future, and power in their decision. Through this dynamic project, metro Atlanta teens create theatre for and about themselves by “colliding” with a dramatic text, reinforcing the idea that theatre can address their particular ideas and feelings.
