SCAD Buzz Bus to surprise KIPP Strive Primary School this Friday!

ATLANTA, Georgia — The SCAD Buzz Bus will bring a large donation of new and gently used art supplies to students at KIPP Strive Primary School at 2 p.m., Friday. Nov. 15.

SCAD staff, students and Art the Bee will surprise the school’s art teacher, Eric Mack, with new supplies provided by Follett and gently used art supplies from SCAD’s summer program ranging from paint brushes and craft supplies to construction paper and colored pencils. The donation will take place in honor of America Recycles Day, a nationally recognized day dedicated to promoting and celebrating recycling in the U.S.

SCAD student ambassadors will visit each classroom to hand-deliver appreciation gifts to each teacher for being a great leader in the classroom. Students will also discuss the importance of showing love for the community through recycling, classroom leadership and creative careers. Each classroom will also contribute to a collaborative artwork inspired by reusing scrap paper, newspapers and print materials to create a coiled collage showcasing the theme of “love and lead.”

The Buzz Bus program, which SCAD President Paula Wallace established in 2010, has positively impacted nearly 6,000 children since its inception. The SCAD Buzz Bus makes surprise visits to local elementary and middle schools and other youth-centered organizations to promote art education through one-on-one student workshops, book readings, musical performances and art-supply donations.

According to the 2011 Commonwealth Fund’s Child Health Scorecard, Georgia is ranked 43rd for child health among the states and the District of Columbia. Regarding genetic disorders, birth defects, and developmental disabilities, many disparities exist and infant mortality is high. The combination of education and resources to families and promoting clinical linkages, particularly for African American communities, is of critical importance to ensure that babies and toddlers have the best start at life.

On Wednesday, November 13, 2013, the Table for Two Foundation will share insights learned from the development of culturally appropriate educational materials on newborn screening (NBS) for African American mothers and families. Presenters will share lessons learned, key findings, barriers to engagement, and recommendations for dissemination and educational opportunities for minority audiences.

KIPP Metro Atlanta Schools Opportunity Fair! #KIPP

 

KIPP Metro Atlanta Schools is actively searching for teachers to join their team and family in the 2014-15 school year.   

There are currently seven KIPP schools in Metro Atlanta including four middle schools, one high school, and two elementary schools.  KIPP will be opening their third elementary school in July 2014.  KIPP has positions available in every content area and grade level for the 2014-15 school year.  This month KIPP staff are hosting their very first K-12 Opportunity Fair and would love for you to attend.

The Big Picture: Rethinking Dyslexia provides personal and uplifting accounts of the dyslexic experience from children, experts and iconic leaders, such as Sir Richard Branson and financier Charles Schwab. Directed by James Redford, the film not only clears up the misconceptions about the condition, but also paints a picture of hope for all who struggle with it.

There will be a panel discussion after the documentary screening moderated by WSB-TV Senior Anchor Jovita Moore, featuring:

The Atlanta Speech School has a long history of serving children with dyslexia. In addition to having a Language and Learning Disabilities Department on its campus, the School served as the outsourced special education department of the metro-Atlanta school systems from the mid-1950s until federal law required that school systems provide their own services in 1975. The Language and Learning Disabilities Department is now known as the Wardlaw School, and it is recognized nationally as one of the top programs in the country for children with dyslexia.  ATLANTA (Aug. 27, 2013) – Pace Academy invites the entire community to celebrate the 50th Annual Fall Fair Oct. 19, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. To showcase the exciting future of the campus, including the addition of the Arthur M. Blank Family Upper School, Pace invites the entire community to RAISE THE ROOF! in celebration of the school's past, present and future.   

The 2013 Fall Fair may look a little different than in previous years due to construction, but that won't stop the fun! The school will utilize the lower school playground, Boyd Gym, the Inman Center, the front lawn of the Castle and the new Pace Mountain to accommodate events typically held on the back field.  RAISE THE ROOF! attractions will include laser tag, karaoke, inflatables, bungee jumps, carnival games for all ages and much more. In addition to a variety of activities, Pace Academy’s Fall Fair will offer delicious food and refreshments. Participating food vendors include King of Pops, the Yumbii food truck, Chick-Fil-A, Al's Frozen Treats, Sweet Auburn BBQ and many more.

"The partnership between parents and school is the secret to our success,” says Headmaster Fred Assaf. “Our Parents Club raises money through this fair to support teachers and students in the classroom. It's a wonderful community fun raiser and fundraiser."

Chick-fil-A Foundation Offering Need-Based Summer Day Camp at Morehouse College

Try a new sport with Chick-fil-A in upcoming Power Camp 2013! The Chick-fil-A Foundation is partnering with Fellowship of Christian Athletes to invite youth near Atlanta to Morehouse College for some new opportunities in sports.

Darrlynn Brister, spokeswoman for the Chick-fil-A Foundation reported that a day camp, Power Camp 2013, is being held where kids can try some non-traditional sports, and get training from accomplished athletes from high school to the pros.

Three camps are being held: June 10-14, June 17-21 and June 24-28. All camps will take place at Morehouse College in Atlanta.

Registration for Power Camp 2013 is now open. To sign up, visit one of the following organizations: Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club, Raising Expectations, Castleberry Hill Neighborhood Association or Pheonix Boys Association.

The camp is offered to youth from all neighboring communities in and around Atlanta.

 PUBLIC BROADCASTING ATLANTA (PBA) IS SET TO HOST A COMMUNITY EXPERT FORUM ON BEHALF OF AMERICAN GRADUATE: LET’S MAKE IT HAPPEN. 

This Drop-Out Prevention Initiative will provide parents, educators and students with indicators and solutions to increase the high school graduation rate.

ATLANTA, GEORGIA February 22^nd- American Graduate: Let’s Make it Happen  will host a panel of experts, advocates, and supporters allowing them to assist parents, teachers, and community stakeholders with essential information and behaviors they can use to aid in increasing the number of students that graduate high school.  This event will be held at D.M. Therrell High School, at 3099 Panther Trail SW, Atlanta, Georgia, 30311 on March 28, 2013 from 6:00 pm until 7:30 pm.  

American Graduate is a multi-year public media initiative, supported by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), to help local communities identify and implement solutions to the high school dropout crisis. Public broadcasting has a long history improving educational outcomes for high-need students and communities. 

Public Broadcasting Atlanta, 90.1, and more than 75 public radio and television stations in over 30 states have launched on-the-ground efforts to keep students on- track to high school graduation and be prepared for college and career.  There will be an exhibit on display showing the work of some of the students who have participated in the Digital Media Arts Club. This exhibit will highlight their pictures and capture their voices as they tell the story of the American Graduate/Systemic Health Initiative in Education.

American Graduate engages and empowers teachers, parents and students to help those most at risk of dropping out through community collaborations and classroom resources.  By putting faces with the numbers- the more than one million young people who fail to graduate each year are able to receive resources to assist in obtaining their high school diploma.  This initiative increases awareness and understanding of the risks and solutions through national and local content, covering all facets of the issue for broadcast, web and  mobile platforms.
