Chick-fil-A Foundation Offering Need-Based Summer Day Camp at Morehouse College

Try a new sport with Chick-fil-A in upcoming Power Camp 2013! The Chick-fil-A Foundation is partnering with Fellowship of Christian Athletes to invite youth near Atlanta to Morehouse College for some new opportunities in sports.

Darrlynn Brister, spokeswoman for the Chick-fil-A Foundation reported that a day camp, Power Camp 2013, is being held where kids can try some non-traditional sports, and get training from accomplished athletes from high school to the pros.

Three camps are being held: June 10-14, June 17-21 and June 24-28. All camps will take place at Morehouse College in Atlanta.

Registration for Power Camp 2013 is now open. To sign up, visit one of the following organizations: Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club, Raising Expectations, Castleberry Hill Neighborhood Association or Pheonix Boys Association.

The camp is offered to youth from all neighboring communities in and around Atlanta.

Project Identity’s Summer Institute – Middle School offers an exciting opportunity for middle school male students to enjoy accelerated learning, sports and activities on the historic campus of Morehouse College. During the 3-week day program, Summer Institute – Middle School offers expert instruction in the arts, sciences, mathematics and additional topics specially selected for the interests of middle school male students. By bringing together students with similar abilities and diverse backgrounds, the program creates an environment of growth but also challenging, but most of all, fun. 

All students who successfully complete their course will receive a certificate of completion.

Supervision

Program participants are supervised throughout the program by a team of carefully selected and trained Project Identity Summer Mentors who are current Morehouse College Students. Mentors chaperone students in class, and to and from classes, meals and will receive the personal attention they need.  Project Identity staff members are also on-site each day for the entire program.

A TYPICAL DAY AT THE SUMMER INSTITUTE – MIDDLE SCHOOL

Monday – Friday

Commuter Student Drop off - 8:45am

Classes in Session - 9:00am - 12:00 noon
Classes meet every morning for 3 hours. Summer mentors escort students to and from class.

Lunch – 12:15pm - 1:00pm
Lunch is served in Chivers dining halls. Students are supervised by Summer Mentors.

Afternoons - 1:10pm – 4:15pm
Afternoon classes and/or sports activities are in session.

Student Pick up - 4:30pm

Parents should plan to drop off their student on campus at 8:45am and pick them up at 4:30pm. The drop off and pick up location will be disclosed when participants are accepted. Students on campus after 4:30pm will be assessed a Extended Day fee. 

Field Trip
There is a field trip scheduled for the last Friday of the program. PI staff and Summer Mentors chaperone field trip.

PROJECT IDENTITY Summer Institute gives rising 9th  through rising  12th grade minority male high school students an exciting glimpse into academic college life.

Open to in-state and out-of-state students, this 3-week residential program replicates the college experience with an intense curriculum and enrichment activities to assist in developing their academic, social and leadership skills. Located on the campus of one of the nations largest, private liberal arts college for men, Morehouse College, Project Identity Summer Institute – High School believes that students succeed when given the tools they need in order to pursue higher education.

PROJECT IDENTITY Summer participants experience being independent by living on campus and learning in a structured and supervised environment.

Summer Institute – High School students live together in a residential housing and participate in an intense curriculum. Participants are taught by faculty and are also involved in enrichment activities including preceptorials on various subjects relating to college life and everyday life experiences, community service activities, and field trips.

Program Requirements:

• Must be a male rising 9th through rising 12th grade student in high school
• Applicants must have sound academic ability
• Preferably have taken the PSAT/SAT, or ACT
• Two letters of recommendations from school counselors or school personnel
• Official school transcript

Applications and materials must be received by the deadline listed. Applications will not be considered for admittance unless returned completed with all required materials by deadline. Incomplete applications will not be considered for acceptance.

Georgia Tech Town Kickoff: Tech partners with Atlantic Station for the 2011 Football Season (Photos)

We had a blast today at the Georgia Tech Town Kickoff event at Atlantic Station. The boys had front row seats at the event and sang and cheered with the football team, cheerleaders, and band!

I haven't been this excited about college football since I was a graduate student at Penn State. The family fun event was fabulous!

I grew up in different college towns throughout the country and want to instill the same tradition in our young boys of being on college campuses (planting the seed early, folks). So, I like to take our boys to different college events throughout the city. If they decide to go out of state for college then that's fine, but I want them to know about all of the wonderful institutions we have in Atlanta and the South.

College Board Reports Show That All Minority Men Face Educational Barriers

Young men of color, regardless of cultural background, face educational barriers that cause them to be less educated than minority women and white men.

According to a press release, two new reports released by the College Board Advocacy & Policy Center highlighted the educational issues that African American men, Asian American and Pacific Islander men, Hispanic/Latino men and Native American men face. The data is based on findings from 92 student interviews and, according to The New York Times, looked at six different paths men of color took after high school--enrollment in postsecondary school, enrollment in the armed forces, participation in the work force, unemployment, incarceration and death.

As the press release noted, data showed that just 18 percent of Hispanic Americans have at least an associate degree. Twenty four percent of Native Americans and Pacific Islanders and 26 percent of African Americans hold at least a two-year degree. As The Chronicle of Higher Education pointed out, men of all cultural backgrounds reported experiencing similar challenges, such as stereotypes, pressure to support their communities or families, money problems or feelings of alienation from their campus. The most shocking statistic that researchers found was that more than 50 percent of young men of color died, were incarcerated or were unemployed before the age of 24.

Furthermore, The New York Times noted that more foreign-born students were likely to drop out than US-born students--among male Latinos born in the US, the dropout rate is 20 percent, while foreign-born males had a 34 percent dropout rate.

Christen Pollock, the College Board's vice president for advocacy, told The Chronicle of Higher Education that the report highlights the importance of postsecondary education, particularly for young men of color.
Gaston Caperton, College Board President, added that it is imperative to raise the percentage of young men of color with an associate degree or higher.

"At a time when our nation is committed to reclaiming its place as the world leader in higher education, we can no longer afford to ignore the plight of our young men of color," said Caperton in the press release. "As long as educational opportunities are limited for some, we all suffer."

According to The New York Times, the report challenged the nation to raise the overall percentage of 25-to-34-year-olds with a postsecondary degree to 55 percent by 2025, up from the current 42 percent.
