Bios

Don Tate is an award-winning illustrator who has drawn for more than 40 books for children, including Duke Ellington’s Nutcracker Suite (Charlesbridge), She Loved Baseball (HarperCollins), and Ron’s Big Mission (Penguin).
It Jes’ Happened: When Bill Traylor Started to Draw marks Don’s debut as an author. It Jes’ Happened is a Lee & Low Books New Voices Honor winner and has already garnered praise—and a star—from Kirkus (a book review journal) and Publisher’s Weekly. Don lives in Austin, Texas, with his wife and son. He works as a graphics reporter for the Austin American-Statesman.

R. Gregory Christie has been freelancing as an illustrator for more than 17 years and has illustrated more than 28 children’s books. He is a three-time recipient of the Coretta Scott King Honor Award in Illustration and a two-time recipient of the New York Times’ 10 Best Illustrated Children’s Books of the Year Award.

Some of his past clients and collaborations include Warner Brothers, Moserobie Music, The New Yorker, the New York Times, The Children’s Museum of Manhattan, the Wall Street Journal, Vibe, Utne Reader, Rolling Stone, Montego Glover, and Pete Seeger. His book Yesterday I Had the Blues was animated and showcased on the PBS television show Between the Lions in 2008. Mr. Christie’s paintings have been used with an animated HBO Kids’ short movie for the educational DVD company Sweet Blackberry. He has also traveled the country, lecturing about literacy, geography, and history.

Recently, Mr. Christie has been commissioned by the New York City Metro Transit Authority’s “Arts for Transit” program to create an image that will be on display in the city’s subway cars for all of 2012. Additionally, Mr. Christie is opening up a live studio and children’s book gift shop in Decatur, Georgia.

Free activities and performances for the entire family in September

ATLANTA, GA - The Woodruff Arts Center is inviting families to Target Family Thursdays to experience free activities from its four divisions: the Alliance Theatre, Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, High Museum and Young Audiences, September 1, 8, 15 and 22 from 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. There will be a wide range of interactive experiences that the entire family can enjoy including theatre performances, storytelling, arts and crafts, films, workshops and lots more.

For the fourth year in a row, Target is making it possible for families to gain access to the educational and cultural offerings of one of Atlanta’s artistic gems.

Scheduled activities during Target Family Thursdays include:

• A Child's Garden of Verses - a highly interactive multi-sensory performance for very small children and their grown-ups presented by the Alliance Theatre.

• Toddler Thursdays – Parents and their children are encouraged to look at works of art at the High Museum of Art and learn a new way of looking at the collections through letters, numbers, colors, and shapes.

• flashART- a great opportunity to allow teens to express their creativity. flashArt is a drop-in art-making workshops for high school students at the High Museum of Art.

• Acting Workshops- kids of all ages can learn the art of acting by participating in workshops led by the Alliance Theatre.

• Into The Woods- collaboration between the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and the Alliance Theatre. The Alliance Theatre’s first play of the 2011-2012 Season, Into the Woods, is a fractured musical that includes references to classic fairy tales including Cinderella and Little Red Riding Hood.

• Family Friendly Films- a selection of films will be available for families to enjoy throughout the day.

I took our oldest son, Roland Jay to the High Museum of Art in Atlanta today. My colleague told me that I had to go see the Radcliffe Bailey exhibition. I'm a huge fan of mixed media and was so excited to learn about the exhibition. I was familiar with Bailey's work, but had never attended one of his exhibitions. After today, I'm a bigger fan of mixed media and so inspired to explore the medium myself.













Radcliffe Bailey: Memory as Medicine June 26 - September 11, 2011

Atlanta-based, internationally known artist Radcliffe Bailey explores American history and memory to encourage healing and transcendence through art. The exhibition features 37 works ranging from heroic to intimate scale, including installations, paintings, sculptures, mixed media, photos on metal, and works on paper.

I had a blast spending one-on-one time with him today. He is gaining an understanding and appreciation for art and design. In addition, he has great table manners!
