Two Thumbs Up for the 2013 Ford Escape! #GoFurtherATL

I'm still 'over the moon' excited that I had the opportunity to partner with Ford to test drive the new 2013 Ford Escape! This SUV is not only fantastic, but features really awesome technology that made me feel safe traveling around the city with our two boys, Roland and Joshua.

As a busy mom on the go, having a spacious and safe car is a true dream! When searching for a new car, safety should always be the top priority.
Last month, was Driver Distraction Month which is driving while engaged in other activities such as, using a cell phone, texting, eating, or reading. Thousands of people die each year because people continue to use their cell phones while driving. The technology in the Ford helps you keep your hands on the wheel and eyes on the road. Although, I didn't have a chance to pick you up for a ride in the 2013 Ford Escape, I wanted to share these great safety features:
  • Do Not Disturb feature: When hooked up to SYNC, this new feature blocks incoming phone calls or text messages from a Bluetooth®-paired mobile phone, diverting calls into voicemail and saving text messages on the device for viewing later. But unlike turning the phone off, drivers can still make voice-activated outgoing phone calls and the SYNC 911 Assist™ feature can make a call in case of emergency.
  • SYNC with MyFord Touch offers multiple ways for customers to manager and control information through voice commands, menus accessed through controls on the steering wheel and touch screens. Upgraded system includes new look, making phone, navigation, entertainment and climate controls even easier to use

Seeing the 2013 Ford Escape for the first time!

Ford Do Not Disturb on MyKey
  • With Active Park Assist, parallel parking is virtually stress-free and hands free
  • BLIS (Blind Spot information System) with Cross Traffic Alert – displays an alert in the side mirror when a vehicle is detected entering a blind spot. Cross-traffic alert warns if traffic is detected approaching from the sides, such as when Escape is leaving a parking space in reverse
  • Curve Control – the first Ford SUV to automatically slow the vehicle when it is cornering too fast.
Doesn't that sound awesome to you? Plus the Escape has the hands free liftgate which makes transporting sporting gear and packages a breeze for moms-on-the-go. Our oldest son saw the trunk pop open on it's own and screamed, "magic."

Test drive a 2013 Ford Escape! There are several great dealerships in the area!

McDonald's "Wholesome Choices" Kickoff Breakfast [Videos]

I’ve been on a weight gain and loss rollercoaster ride ever since I had children four years ago. My husband Roland and I have two sons, Roland Jay "RJ", 4-years-old, and Joshua Palmer "JP", 2-years-old. With our first son, I lost 70 pounds in one year and after our second baby, I gained and later lost 40 pounds. I'm now rocking the scale between 150 -155 lbs. I declare, each week the scale is either my friend or worst enemy.

Over the last year, I've written a couple of posts about my weight loss challenge and dreams of wearing a size 8 comfortably again (without Spanx). Believe it or not, I was a lean-machine, track running and cheerleading tumbler in high school. That's why I was overly excited when McDonald’s asked me to join their “Wholesome Choices Blogger Program,” not only to get me back on track in 5 weeks, but also to encourage you, my lovely loyal readers, to start living a wholesome lifestyle as well.

My twin brother, Joshua Manning Marable and I attended the McDonald's kickoff breakfast earlier this week to listen to advice from health expert Andrea Riggs, mother of two, from GetBodyBeautiful.com. She’s fabulously fit with Michelle Obama arms and ripped abs. Andrea talked to us about not only exercising, but eating better and taking control of our lives.

You may still be thinking, what were we doing at McDonald’s talking about “Wholesome Choices?” Well, did you know that McDonald’s offers a variety of whole-grain oatmeal choices on its breakfast menu, available all day. The Fruit & Maple Oatmeal and the Apple Cinnamon Walnut Oatmeal are both 100% natural whole grain oats, rich in fiber and freshly prepared for you.

Are you on a mission to lose weight or change something in your life? Are you willing to join me on this “Wholesome Choices” challenge. Over the next few weeks, I will be sharing my own tips and ideas for making more wholesome choices in your every day life. I sure hope so! For the next couple of weeks, let's take this journey together to stay on track and start living wholesome lives.

Check out this funny video "Mount McDonald," created by Joshua Manning Marable, featuring Daniel Alejandro Ferry for the "Wholesome Choices" Blogger Program.

McDonald’s partnered with bloggers such as me to participate in its “Wholesome Choices” Blogger Program. As part of that program, I received compensation. They did not tell me what to purchase or what to say about the products used, and believe that consumers and bloggers are free to form their own opinions and share them in their own words. Working Moms Finding "Me Time" at Lunch Time

Moms need to take time out of their busy schedules to treat themselves. This special time alone is usually called, "Me Time." Oftentimes my scheduled "Me Time" occurs during my drive to work, lunch time, and drive home.

When I'm not walking around Georgia Tech's campus during my lunch break with my walking buddy,  I'm usually treating myself to a wonderful lunch at one of Atlanta's great restaurants.

Working in Midtown is absolutely wonderful because there are so many fantastic restaurants just a stone throw away from my job. Most of the eateries are pretty affordable too!

I usually bring my lunch to work, but about two times a week I like to go out and eat lunch. I refer to this time as, "Me Time." I'll tell my husband, Roland that I'm "treating myself to lunch."

Being Married with Two Boys doesn't give me a lot of time to be alone. I enjoy the 1 hour lunch break that I have to eat by myself, people watch, and enjoy a good hot meal uninterrupted.

Today I ate lunch at Doc Green's located at Atlantic Station. I ate the Dr. Beeks salad which consisted of the following: Field greens tossed with cranraisins, feta cheese, candied walnuts and raspberry vinaigrette. (Recommended with grilled chicken.)

I tracked my calories on Lance Armstrong's LiveStrong.com blog for Doc Green's Dr. Beeks Salad Nutrition and found that I consumed 381 calories, Fat 20g, Carbs 42g, Protein 11g, Sodium 981mg.

After eating my salad, I ran across the street and spoiled myself by picking up some chocolate candy from Kilwin's. The owner at Kilwin's, John Dallaire is so personable. He gave me a sample of a Pecan praline and it was fabulous!

You can always find me here and on MyAtlantaMoms.com.

No Green Gene? No Problem, Visit a Farmer’s Market

In March 2009, First Lady Michelle Obama broke ground for the White House organic garden. I watched her on television as she made the first dig, and was thrilled at the site of the twenty-three fifth graders from Bancroft Elementary School in Washington, D.C., digging right along with her. The 1,100-square-foot garden plot is located on the south lawn of the White House. The garden is a symbol that educates and encourages children about nutritious foods to eat. It will provide food for the White House’s First Family, staff, visitors, and also help feed the hungry.

Growing up, we always had a garden. Although my mom, Hazel Ann, may not give herself this title, but I label her as an “avid gardener.” Along with my in-laws, Ernestine and Jay, she grew up eating organic vegetables and fresh fruits grown from her backyard. Unfortunately, everything I plant dies, so I guess the green gene skipped me. Now, as a mother, I sometimes feel guilty because I don’t have a garden to gather fresh vegetables. Instead, I buy fruits and vegetables from the local grocery store.

Optimistic, I decided to venture out and learn more about organic foods and various ways to support local farmers. I gained an interest in buying directly from farmers, after visiting Sag Harbor’s Farmers Market. While at the market, the weather matched the personalities of the farmers: absolutely beautiful. There were white tents lined up in a row with local farmers selling everything from vegetables, baked goods, cheese, honey, fish, and much more. Many farmers offered samples to my family and me as we visited each tent. The food was very tasty and nutritious.

We live in a super-sized world where fast food and eating out is advertised on a daily basis. Sometimes easy access to fast foods can make us forget about what is most nutritious for us to eat. Local Harvest.org web site states, “The best organic food is what's grown closest to you. Use our website to find farmers' markets, family farms, and other sources of sustainably grown food in your area, where you can buy produce, grass-fed meats, and many other goodies.” I’ve used the website to help find local farmers’ markets near my community. The next trip to the farmers’ market will be at Serenbe. I look forward to instilling in our children the lifestyle of eating healthy and supporting local farmers.

Nappy Hair: I Love My Hair.

I grew up wearing braids.  I can remember running through sprinklers in Nashville, TN with two big plaits in my hair.  In the fourth grade, Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston were all the rave, and my sister and I got jerry curls trying to emulate what was "in."  The curl juice stained our pillowcases and the chemical took out our hair.  My mom quickly put my sister and I back in braids.

Occasionally, my mom would press our hair to straighten it.  The "kitchen," or what we called "the baby hairs" near the neck, would give me goose bumps when she tried to straighten them.  The smell of any hot comb still makes me reminisce on sitting in the "hot seat" getting dolled up. I'd bite my lip hoping that mommy wouldn't burn my neck and leave a nasty scar.  The image of beauty in my mind at a young age was straight hair that flowed in the wind.

Growing up my siblings and I moved from one university town to another, our parents are educators; which allowed us the opportunity to live in different cities throughout the U.S.  The communities we lived in were fairly diverse, but on many occasions, there were very few Black kids in my class.  We were the minority.

When I was eight years old, for fun I wrapped bath towels around my head, grabbed a bare paper towel roller, used it as a microphone, and instantly became the "material girl."  I wanted long straight hair like my White and Latino girlfriends. I loved being Black, but images of my hair weren't the norm in the media. I didn't understand why water would make my hair shrivel up, or why silk pillowcases were a must have in keeping your hair-do.

As a teenager, I became more comfortable with my African American textured hair.  I was crowned my high school's Homecoming Queen wearing braids.  Even though I was now proud of my hair and it’s texture, I still experienced difficulties because I didn’t necessarily feel that I fit in. Looking back I laugh at the photos, because the crown was constructed for straight hair and the combs on the crown rested on top of my head.

In college, I still experimented with my hair and continued to struggle with what was deemed beautiful.  My college roommate convinced me to take out my braids, and she gave me my very first relaxer, and washed out the chemical in the dormitory bathtub.  It burned like hell, but took out the naps and my hair was instantly straight. My hair was fried, dyed, and laid to the side. I thought I was the hottest ticket in town.

About a year ago, I watched Chris Rock's documentary "Good Hair," which really made  me question what I was doing to my own hair. Why was I putting guanidine hydroxide on my scalp? I decided to take a break from relaxing my hair and go back to my natural roots.

Sesame Street's video, "I Love My Hair" is the perfect message to send young girls of color.  It's a message that is driven from the White House to one's own house.  The images of the Obama girls wearing cornrows to Sesame Street's characters wearing afros will only help girls' self-esteem and feeling of inclusiveness.
The same message of self-love is heard in Willow Smith's song, "Whip My Hair."  In the song, she emphasizes the importance of loving oneself.  Her image and lyrics exude a fine example of what it means to be proud of who you are.

I can only hope that this message is carried out and more young girls take pride in their nappy hair. In loving my own hair, I've grown to love that there are so many wonderful and unique ways to style my hair. Whether I press my hair, wear twists, weave or braids. What I questioned as "beautiful" growing up is no longer an issue. Hopefully, this positive message will spread around the globe so young Black and Brown girls will see the true beauty of their hair.

Balance Work & Motherhood: Making Work…Work for Us.

The best days of my life weren’t when my future husband, Roland asked for my phone number, or when I defended my master’s thesis. I thought nothing could be better than the day I said, “I do!” and jumped the broom. It was when I gave birth to our sons, Roland Jay and Joshua.

Now, three years later, I think back to when I was in the hospital sending text messages just moments after giving birth to our first son. I’ll admit that I was a workaholic. I worked over 10-hour days and responded to work-related emails on the weekends. My life was my job and work came first. I skipped family functions and sorority meetings to work. I completely sacrificed my social life.

Being on maternity leave was truly a blessing. I had time to collect my thoughts and prioritize life. I struggled with returning back to work, but enjoyed my job and wanted to fulfill my dreams. Before returning, I did the following: 1) changed my work hours to 8am – 5pm, in order to pick up our son from daycare, 2) found a daycare where I could view our son online, and 3) promised myself that I would leave work on time every day.

After giving birth to our first child, I had fears of returning back to work. Fears, such as not being able to juggle my new life. Although an extremely good multitasker, having the responsibility to take care of another human being was a huge deal. Sleep deprivation and pacing up and down the same hallway ruled my whole universe. The arduous task of juggling work and motherhood probed me to find out how other moms balance work and motherhood.

Claire Jaramillo, associate director at a nonprofit organization states, “My job has given me a flexible working schedule. I telecommute two days a week, which really helps me maintain my milk supply. It also lessens the amount of time that I’m separated from my baby. My job has also created a space for me to pump.”

There are several options that can help women balance every day life. If your job does not require regular face-to-face communication, then telecommuting may be a great option. Certain companies may allow various start and end times for salaried positions. Sometimes, employees have the option to choose to work a compressed work week, in which they work longer hours during the week and have a full or partial day off. Colleagues may also be interested in job sharing, in which they share the same job and each work part-time.

The key to balancing work and motherhood is creating boundaries and making sure that your family is first priority. Teresa Hernandez, Human Resources Generalist at a west-coast university, changed positions at the university shortly after returning back from maternity leave. “I felt comfort in my community of friends/mentors at the university, who encouraged me to consider transferring jobs. They helped me find a position in Human Resources that fit my skills and goals. I transferred in January of 2008 and have been very satisfied; my work ends at the end of the day, and I can go home to my family.”

I think it’s also important to take time out of each day to get centered. Below are several tips to make your day more enjoyable.

* Personalize your space. Make your workspace a place that makes you smile.
* Take a (virtual) vacation. (I close my eyes and pretend that I’m 21 years-old again, vacationing in Jamaica).
* Try to get the annoying things off your to-do list before lunch.
* Take a walking break in the afternoon and get some fresh air or visit a friend in another department.
* During lunch, pray, exercise, take a nap (rest), play some tunes, or meditate.
* Add a fountain in your office. The sounds of running water can be soothing.
* Dress up! Wear something that makes you feel and look good!

There are more than 83 million moms in the United States, and 61% are striving in the work place. Everyday mothers are successfully accomplishing this great balancing act: work and motherhood.

The women’s movement suggested that mothers can have it all. From a personal experience, I would have to agree. The topic and discussion of stay-at-work moms is profound, yet it is our living within the presence of these moments that tremendous accomplishment and self-confidence are gained.
